These past two weeks have set me on a tailspin of sorts. Social media and the news aren’t necessarily my friends right now. There’s so much misinformation, videos circulating, statistics that I can’t keep up with, and I’m not sure what to believe and what not to believe. One thing I know for sure however, is this: God is in control. I am not.
God has immensely blessed my husband and I this year. In the midst of a global pandemic, we have been so grateful and fortunate. Whether it’s the devil or just life keeping me humble, however, I keep waiting for the other shoe to drop. Something in me feels as though this won’t last, and it terrifies me.
What I’ve been doing lately to combat fear, anxiety, and worry is this bible study, working out by taking long walks outside & running on our treadmill, and blasting worship music. The other night I actually kept it on while running, sporadically lifting my hands as I knew God would guide me through this run, BUT ALSO guide me and lead me on through life. Whatever life brings me. It is not my strength that can get me through the days. It is His ALONE. Like Paul says in 2 Corinthians 12:9, God’s power is made perfect in our weakness. I continue to pray I will feel God’s power, sovereignty, love, and wisdom in my life and in our home for the days and months to come.
So, I thought I would share the top 5 worship songs that are getting me through these days. I listen through Spotify at any time of day!
“No One Ever Cared for Me Like Jesus” by Steffany Gretzinger – this hit home for me the other day. I’ve never heard anything like it. You can hear her tear up in the song, which is so refreshing and humbling to hear a songwriter be so thankful in their praise to Jesus! I tend to put my hope and happiness in other people, so this song is a “slap in the face” sort of reminder that humans are fickle, selfish, and at our core, sinful. Our only hope for true happiness and fulfillment is in Jesus. I pray you feel that today & each day in this pandemic, and beyond.
“Graves Into Gardens” by Elevation Worship – if you have trouble focusing on the lyrics, I understand since this “music video” is quite jumpy & intense! Haha, but I do love it because I see it as a glimpse of Heaven one day. If you’re struggling today, keep repeating those lyrics: “Oh, there’s nothing better than you / there’s nothing better than you / Lord, there’s nothing / nothing is better than you!” Truly, you can try to fill your heart with so much these days. Netflix, home makeovers, shopping, alcohol, new recipes – but nothing…NOTHING will fill your soul like Jesus! Our souls were made for Him! When I think of that mental image, graves into gardens, I’m reminded of Revelation 21:
A New Heaven and a New Earth
21 Then I saw “a new heaven and a new earth,”[a] for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. 2 I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. 3 And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. 4 ‘He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death’[b] or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.”
5 He who was seated on the throne said, “I am making everything new!” Then he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.”
6 He said to me: “It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. To the thirsty I will give water without cost from the spring of the water of life.7 Those who are victorious will inherit all this, and I will be their God and they will be my children.
“Way Maker” by Leeland – if the world needed a song for such a time as this, it would be this song! Every time I listen, I cannot get over what perfect timing this song was released. If you haven’t seen this video of doctors worshipping on the top of a hospital to this song, please watch! There’s a clip of a woman holding a sign that says: Fear is a Liar. YES. FEAR IS A LIAR!!! I also LOVE this version sung by Mandisa. Nothing is impossible with the Lord.
“Grateful” by Davy Flowers with Watermark Music – what a delight Davy’s been to our church. When this was released, I was weepy! What a simple yet powerful message: singing your gratitude to the Lord. There’s so much research out now about how important being grateful is that it can be backed up WITH the Bible! How amazing. Colossians 3:16, Jonah 2:9, & Philippians 4:4-7 all share with us how important it is to REJOICE and be grateful!
“Breakthrough” by Red Rocks Worship – this one is intense, filled with truth and awe about how little we still yet know about our Lord and what’s to come of this world. It helps me listen to this even though I approach it with fear and trembling because I know where I’m going if and when Jesus comes back to earth any time soon. This is what we need to be praying for right now: a breakthrough. A breakthrough with this terrible and evil virus; a breakthrough in the hearts of many (Saints & ain’ts as Jackie Hill Perry says); a breakthrough in this election and in this country.
BONUS: “His Eye Is On the Sparrow”, sung by many, but my favorites are by Lauryn Hill and Tanya Blount when they sang this in Sister Act 2, and this Jessica Simpson version! (: I’ve cherished this song for many years, and if you need a reminder that God watches over you always, this is it. As in Matthew 6:25-34, Jesus reminds us that God takes care of the flowers in the field and the birds of the air, so why wouldn’t He take care of us also? I ADORE the ESV version of this text, as verse 34 declares: Sufficient for the day is its own trouble. Get that through your head. Stop worrying. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.
There you have it. 5, no, 6 songs to help you through these times. I’d love to hear what’s getting you through these days. Are there songs, books, shows, specific verses helping you out? Drop them below!
